The Boyne Valley Honey Company was established by Malachy McCloskey in Drogheda almost 50 years ago. At 16 years of age Malachy began working in his father’s shop where honey was an important part of the offering. When his original supplier died, Malachy sourced new supplies from beekeepers in both Drogheda and Wexford. Soon he had more honey than he could sell in his own shop and approached other retailers in Drogheda to buy the surplus. From this simple transaction came the Boyne Valley name and the first of the company’s brands.
In 1966, Boyne Valley Honey found its permanent home in Mell, Drogheda – purely by coincidence the name is derived from the Irish for honey (mil/meala).
Today, Boyne Valley Honey is the biggest selling brand of honey in Ireland. Boyne Valley Honey outsells all other brands of honey combined by 6:1. The brand continues to grow through innovations – the most important of which has been the introduction of Squeezy honey which allows people to pour honey directly onto toast/porridge or into smoothies/tea without the need for sticky spoons.
